The learning gardens - san ramon, ca

The Learning Gardens Pre-school at Boardwalk Place in San Ramon, a 2.2-acre site, was designed to capture many aspects of the surrounding neighborhood’s eclectic styles situated along the majestic San Ramon Creek. The project scope also included organizing the existing 7.5-acre community garden to make improvements for the gardens and community access needs. The design incorporates elementary school student drop off, additional onsite parking community garden spaces and education bus parking as well. The regional vernacular design style fits comfortably into the fabric of the neighborhood to provide the highest quality in pre-school and community garden environments. The project development accommodates a maximum of 120 children, 20 staff, with 29 parking spaces provided. The pre-school building is 9,500 sq. ft. and natural playground areas are designed, incorporating gross motor skills, creativity and environmental discovery and learning.  

The project plan created more than just a child care center, but a community institution that promotes nature and sustainability while giving back.  The goal was to nurture a love of learning and pride while watching something grow for both young and old.  The overarching goal was to relieve the City from the burden of maintaining the garden by handing it back to the community with a solid plan for continued sustainability through a non-profit foundation, resident Master Gardener and physical improvements. The project team development an outdoor amphitheater for garden classes, a small community center with permanent restrooms, a Farmer’s Market booth/staging area.
